Netgear introduced its first-ever cable modem which is none other than the CM1000 modem. Yes, we are talking about it because it supports the latest DOCSIS 3.1 technology. We hope you are familiar with this technology because it just changes the way we use cable modems at our house. There is a huge difference between DOCSIS 3.0 and the newer and better 3.1 technology. The DOCSIS 3.1 is as close to the fibres that you are going to get with coax and don’t worry, the cables for the connection remain the same. Even though it was not being utilized in the early days, it has now become a benchmark for most of the cable modems available in the market. With the efficient processor, Minimal power consumption and no overheating issue, what else could you ask for!
It’s safe to assume that you are here because you want to buy your cable modem, isn’t it? Well, you won’t regret your decision because there are several reasons as to why you should have your own cable modem. The first and substantial being, not having to pay monthly rental fees to your cable service provider. Moreover, this is not the only reason but we have a whole Netgear CM1000 review planned out to help you in the decision making process. Let’s dive right into it!
NETGEAR CM1000 Reviews
The design and the overall look of the device are very personal. Besides, not everyone considers this to be an important aspect to consider while buying a device, especially a modem. But if the design is great, it is like the icing on the cake; makes something a whole lot better.
Lucky for you, the design of the Netgear cable modem CM1000 is something noteworthy. It’s simple, sleek, and just marvellous. The polyhedron shaped case resembles a lot like the CM700 modem but it gets better. It has a black shiny finish which is a bonus as it won’t retain fingerprints. It is quite lightweight, however, the stand on which the whole modem is built feels solid. On the back of the modem, we have an ethernet port, a coax port for your cable, a power button, and the power port. There is a status indicator LED lights on the front that are arrayed on a metal band. Overall, keeping this modem anywhere in your room will just increase the elegance of the room.
When we tried to set up this cable modem, we were surprised to see how easy it was. The first that we did was take out our old modem and unplug all the wires such as the ethernet cable coax, and power cable. Pretty obvious that the next step we took was to plug the new power adapter into the back along with a few other wires. After pressing the power ‘on’ button, we were all set to go. The last thing that we did was call our cable service provider and add the CM1000 modem to our account. By the way, there is a dedicated application for the setup, the Netgear genie app! This app helped us a lot in the setup process.
How can we miss out on talking about the speeds in our CM1000 review! The modem claims to have download speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 304 Mbps. Do keep in mind that this cable modem is suitable only for cable plans up to 1 Gigabit speeds and we tested the speeds accordingly. Honestly, the speed test was a success and we couldn’t be happier with it. We were able to have download speeds up to 900 Mbps and we were happy that we got our money’s worth. The modem also exceeded the 1 gigabits per second and we didn’t have any hassle in making that possible, all thanks to the DOCSIS 3.1 technology.
A modem will only be effective if the hardware and software components of it are compatible with your ISP. As in the case of the CM1000 modem, Most Major cable companies are compatible with it including Xfinity, cox and spectrum, so you can have the best internet speeds available. Along with it, the DOCSIS 3.1 technology in the router is universally supported, unlike other routers with the same technology in the market. It also makes it eligible for running through IPv6, so you won’t have to upgrade your modem soon. The CM1000 modem is also compatible with most of the prevailing consoles such as PS5 and Xbox.
- DOCSIS 3.1
DOCSIS stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification. The 3.1 version has a slight improvement over the 3.0 version as it uses a bandwidth of 20 kHz to a maximum of 50 kHz, thus decreasing the channel size and increasing the input of data packets. It also extends the range of the usable spectrum of the modem to up to 1 GHz. The DOCSIS 3.1 in the CM1000 modem makes it capable of supporting speeds up to 6 Gbps, which is not possible with any other cable connection. It also depends on whether your cable provider is working with the same technology. Though as of now, the fastest service provider Comcast, has a system to only provide speeds up to 1 Gbps. The Netgear cable modem CM1000 can keep up with a total of 32 bonded channels on the downstream side and 8 channels on the upstream side.
- Broadcom Chipset
The CM1000 modem is equipped with a 1.5 GHz Broadcom chipset BCM3390 and is supported by 2 cores. The chipset offers 256 MB RAM and a Flash Memory of 128 Mb. It makes the modem efficient enough to connect with 6-10 devices without any interrupting connection, thus making it suitable for small and Medium Homes (Check out our post on best router for multiple users). The entire setup of any modem depends upon the chipset it is equipped with and therefore the Broadcom chipset offers the easiest modem setup to the CM1000. Broadcom is supported by all the ISP’s as it is the most popular chipset in the market. The Broadcom chipset kept the internet speed stable enough, even when we connected 8 devices at a time and looking at the performance, the CM1000 seems very effective for up to 10 devices at a time.
- NETGEAR Genie App
What’s better than having control of your router with the help of your mobile phone and the Netgear Genie application makes it possible for you. It provides a simple interface with all the necessary parameters such as the Modem setup, Network status, network strength, Modem security and Internet speed Test. So you don’t have to make any changes by resetting the router again and again. Also, for security purposes, it allows you to block any device connected to the modem with just a single click. The Netgear Genie app is available on both Android and IOS platforms.

The CM1000 modem uses the BCM3390 Broadcom chipset. The chipset has 256 MB RAM and a Flash Memory of 128 Mb, making it efficient enough to connect with 6-10 devices at once.
The Major difference between CM1000 and CM1100 is that the CM1000 is not compatible with Multi-Gig Internet Support, whereas the later is. That means, the CM 1100 can provide speeds of more than 1 Gbps to multiple devices but the CM 1000 cannot. The CM1000 has only one Gigabit Ethernet port whereas the CM1100 has two. And of course, there is a price difference as well!
